Global Markets: Canadian manufacturing sales up slightly in 2016

The following is a glance at the news moving markets globally:
- Canada’s total manufacturing sales rose one per cent to $614.4 billion in 2016, following a 1.7 per cent decline in 2015. Higher sales in the transportation equipment and food industries offset declines in the petroleum and coal product industries, Statistics Canada said in a report on Monday.
- Manufacturing sales reached a record high $53.1 billion Cnd in December 2016, largely attributable to a higher volume of goods sold. The previous record of $53.5 billion was set in July 2008, prior to the economic downturn, StatCan said.
- Following two consecutive quarters of growth, Greece’s economy contracted from October to December, according to reports out of the country on Monday. Greece’s seasonally adjusted economic output fell 1.2 per cent in the fourth quarter, which is a bigger drop than analysts had expected.
